I feel like I’ve said it more than once, but the fact that I am currently releasing my own music is something that just seems impossible. The fact that people seem to actually like it feels even more baffling and bizarre. Hell, people even have FUN watching me perform live??? I don’t know what happened, but I am deeply glad that it did.

I’ve always been connected to music and the arts in various ways, but making my own music has been the exact thing that I needed. The creative endeavor that seems to be sticking. The outlet for catharsis that is actually allowing me to work out complicated feelings in myself.

2025 saw the release of my second full-length MEGAFAUNA album (I Owe This Land a Body), three MEGAFAUNA EPS (Nature Is Healing - with Homesick Ghosts, cnʁʁԍuϝ λԍɑʁ ɑʁმnwԍuϝ, and haunts: the Ghostin’ OST), the debut EP from my side project VNRL (Sick), a collaboration with Vancouver metal band Ashen Pall on their new album (False Idol, Hollow Crown), a handful of compilation appearances, almost a dozen live shows, and even my first appearances at music festivals. It truly overwhelms me to write it all down like this, to see it laid out.

The Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver even decided to screen my live-scored version of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari - which for those keeping track is the SECOND film I have provided a live-score for (last year being Nosferatu). I really do feel extraordinarily privileged to have been able to do the things that I’m doing, and that - at least for now - I’ll get to continue doing them going forward.

While the music biz isn’t making me rich - far from it - the year did present some really unique and cool opportunities to talk about the art that I am making. The folks over at Schaden Collective had me on, I was interviewed by Metal Riot, hell people even reviewed and seemed to like my music - which will never not surprise me.

RealGone called Nature is Healing “the ultimate slow burn”
MutantZones called it “eerie and mysterious”

Sleeping Village said cnʁʁԍuϝ λԍɑʁ ɑʁმnwԍuϝ “makes the hair stand up on the back of [their] neck” and that I Owe This Land a Body “the perfect antithesis of easy listening”.

On The Fringes of Sound said that the album was “genuinely unsettling” and that it had “some of the most incredible [percussion] work [they] have heard in quite a while”

Truly the things that people have had to say about all of the work that I released has been so deeply humbling that it’s hard to really express. I struggle with imposter syndrome pretty frequently, and so its hard to believe that not only do people like what I’m doing - but they also GET it. They understand what I’m trying to say, and there is something so deeply meaningful about that. To feel seen in such a vulnerable way.

It is, of course, also deeply terrifying, but I guess that comes with the territory.

At risk of this going from “reflecting about” to “bragging about” my year, Syrup Moose Radio one a National Community Radio Award - which is truly incredible and humbling. I had hoped to be there in person but it just didn’t quite come together. That said, here’s hoping for another one in 2026? Maybe?

It would be insane if I didn’t mention that 2025 is also the year that I licensed a song to a video game. The folks over at Clipthrough have used my music in their debut release, ODYSSEY: Starship Pinball and its genuinely still kind of surreal. I’ve played the game on my own computer and everything, and its fucking weird to hear your music in someone else’s product. The game is out in early access now, and you can (and should) buy it for $5. The reviews thus far have been good too, so that’s always nice to see.

I really don’t know what’s in store for next year. Based on the world as it seems to be - I imagine it’s not going to be an easy year for any number of reasons and that does make it feel sort of pointless to pontificate on what - in the grand scheme - is pretty meaningless stuff. That said, it has meant a huge amount to me, and I guess I have to let that count for something. Otherwise what’s the point of anything?

2026, in broad strokes, will see the return of Syrup Moose Records and three releases (at least) from yours truly. Plus some other stuff I’m not allowed to talk about yet but I do assume happens in 2026. Maybe sooner though, who knows.

This year, I managed to buy a house with my wife, adopted a 5th cat (because I’m out of my mind) and started using a CPAP machine (which holy fuck has been life changing). I’m still in my advocacy job, doing work that I feel good about doing, and I’m doing my best to ‘think globally’ and ‘act locally’. Finding places I can make an impact, instead of getting lost in the behemoth nature of the world around me.

I hope this was at least moderately interesting to read.

See you next year. <3

Alberta starting on a frightening road and a selection of Palestinian artists.
